Residence Two

Matthew O’Malia was the project architect for Residence Two. In 2008 Residence Two won a New England AIA Design Excellence Merit Award, featured on the cover of the October Issue of Maine Home and Design. The home’s design concept was based on the client’s desire to visually integrate the building into an unusual site (an abandoned gravel pit), while creating a strong and fluid connection from the interior spaces to the surrounding natural environment. The formal response was to insert the building into the earthen embankment, providing it shelter from the northerly winds, and open then open the building up to the south to optimize the passive solar gain and views. The program was separated into discrete volumes running east to west through the site, which become both a backdrop and a foil to view the surrounding Coast. Repeating and shifting the simple curved roof forms creates unexpected and beautiful spatial experiences in and around the house.
