Residence One

Matthew O’Malia was the project architect for Residence One, a New England American Institute of Architects Design Excellence award winning project. This project was also featured in Architectural Digest's October issue. The design concept of this building came from listening carefully to the client’s ideas for their house and carefully combining those with the site. The house is built on a south-west facing property overlooking a bay. The floor plan is divide into two volumes and then shifted to optimize the views of the bay and the solar gain. The building's steel frame projects over its surroundings on an exposed concrete foundation, creating a weightless effect as the house floats over the site. The home’s north facade is tightly screened from the elements and the driveway, while the south façade is open to the sun and views. The East and West facades stretch down the sloped site to the sea. The building’s complex form creates many different relationships with its surroundings and is best understood by moving in, on and through it.
